Nelma Faye Koon Williams was a native of the state of Arkansas born on Main Cleveland, Arkansas.ġ950-51 Girls basketball coach, physical education teacher, Lavaca High School, Lavaca, ARġ951-53 Girls basketball coach, P.E. She was a lady who was an example to us all and she remains the true spirit of RHS. Her dedication, character, and initiative brought both state and national recognition and honor to Rogers High School. She inspired, encouraged, challenged, and nurtured many who were privileged to be in her classes, on her athletic teams, and spirit groups over the years. Many would become business leaders in Rogers and others joined the military where they gave the ultimate sacrifice defending our country during World War II.įor 29 years, the late Nelma Williams served Rogers High School with boundless energy. Many players off of this team went on to play college sports at places like the University of Arkansas, University of New Mexico, Hendrix College, and the United States Military Academy. The team played their home games on the athletic field at the corner of 2nd and Locust where the Harp’s Store and Mercy Clinic are presently located. The next week a shipment of shoes arrived from Chicago. Coach Ledbetter made a call to the Chicago Cardinals, who he played for in 19. As practice began in 1936 there were not enough cleats to outfit the entire team. Their defense only surrendered 18 points for the entire season. They finished with an undefeated 9-0 record winning the District and State Championships (unofficial). This football team’s accomplishments were nothing short of exceptional in their day and time. The 1936 team is represented by many friends and relatives.
